A:Good morning. May I help you?

B:Good morning. I'm Wang Wenping, coming for an interview with Mr Waley. We made an appointment yesterday on the phone. Is Mr Waley available now?

A:Oh, yes, Miss Wang. Mr Waley is waiting for you at his office. Just a moment, please. I'll let him know you're here. (to the phone.)

C:Waley speaking.

A:Hello, Mr Waley, Miss Wang's been here for the interview.

C:Send her up, please.

A:Yes. (to Miss Wang) Mr Waley asks you to go up to his office. It's room 405, on the fourth floor.

B:Room 405 on the fourth floor.

A:That's right. There is a lift at the end of the corridor.

B:Thank you.

B:May I come in?

C:Come in, please, Miss Wang. Nice to meet you. Sit down, please.

B:Thank you, Mr Waley.

C:I've been looking over your application. I see you've got several years' experience in secretarial work. May I know what has made you decide to apply for a position here?

B:I worked as a junior secretary. My responsibilities include typing, filing, answering telephone calls and such routine office work. I feel I'm ready for a more challenging position.

C:That's why you want to have a change, I suppose.

B:Yes, I want to move ahead. I understand you're looking for an executive secretary. I've completed a secretary training course including Business Communication, Accounting, Bookkeeping, Theories and Applications of Computer Science. This year I'm taking Advanced Secretary Practice. I hope such a training will help me in my career.

C:I believe it will. As secretary here, you'll assist me in my daily routine, dealing with correspondence and teaming up with people in the office for a smooth operation. How do you feel about routine work?

B:A secretary's work is often routine work. I'm confident that I'm able to handle the office routine. I've been well trained for this.

C:You mentioned you're taking an Advanced Secretary Practice course. Did you find anything impressive in the course?

B:The course has been very helpful. It's acquainted me with many new methods of working. In particular the new wording “to work with the boss” instead of the previously accepted “ to work for the boss” has struck me.

C:According to your understanding, what does the difference mean?

B:“To work with the boss” means to work as team member with the boss in order to maximize efficiency. I believe it also means that the secretary and the boss have a mutual respect for each other.

C:May I know your comments on your previous job, please?

B:I must admit it was somewhat boring, but it surely was very important for the company. Customers get the first impression from the secretary or the receptionist secretary. I always did my best to be cheerful, patient,

and willing to help. My office manager has a high opinion on my performance and I felt sorry that in our company there was no opportunity for my advancement.

C:Yes. I've got the idea from your recommendation. Are you aware of your weak points?

B:Yes, I'm used to playing a supporting role. That means my decision making ability needs improving.

C:Anyway, I don't expect anything perfect from the beginning. What do you feel about overtime?

B:It's fine. I understand what having more responsibilities means. Even before, I was not a nine to five person. Could you please tell me, generally speaking, how often the executive secretary works overtime, and how many more hours she puts in?

C:It depends. If we have important meetings or visiting delegations, you have to stay with us. It's not unusual.

B:I see. I think I can find my way out.

C:Do you have any more questions to ask me about the job?

B:Let me see. What's the starting salary and what sort of fringe benefits does the job offer?

C:Well, the starting salary would be 2,500 yuan RMB per month, and it will be adjusted according to your performance. Generally speaking, raises will be given after trial employment of three months. We provide fringe benefits such as semi annual bonuses, four weeks of paid vacation a year, and health insurance. An average executive secretary gets about 40,000 yuan RMB a year.

B:When can you reach a final decision, Mr Waley?

C:We've got several other applicants, so we can't reach a final decision until we've talked to all of them. Anyway, I'll contact you within this month, and keep you informed of our processing progress.

B:Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity, Mr Waley.

C:Thank you for your interest in this company. Good bye, Miss Wang.

B:Good bye.

A:好的。

A:Come in.My name is Harry Wilson. How do you do?

B:My name is Lily Lee.How do you do?

A:Sit down,please.

B:Thank you.

A:Let me ask you a few questions,Miss Lee.Where do you live?

B:I live in Beijing.

A:Beijing,I see.And where are you going to school?

B:I go to Peking University.

A:Where is that?

B:I beg your pardon?

A:Where is Peking University? In what district?

B:Oh,it's in Haidian.

A:And what is your major?

B:I'm majoring in English.

A:I see.Have you taken any business classes or others?

B:Yes,I've taken typing and Secretarial Theory and this year I'm taking Secretarial Practice and Current English.

A:Have you ever worked before?

B:Yes,I had a part time job for two months at International Trading Co.

B:Yes,I've been to America.I lived in Wisconsin on a homestay program.

A:Oh,really? How long did you be there?

B:Eleven months,when I was in high school.

A:Oh,wonderful. No wonder you speak English so well, and you must be used to dealing with foreigners.

B:Yes,I am, to some extent.

A:Good. Now,do you have any questions you'd like to ask me about this company?

B:Yes,I would like to ask about the salary. How is it decided?

A:Well, all new employees begin at a standard salary of 2,000 yuan per month. Then, after your training period, you are given an assignment.Someone like you may be given a higher ranking assignment, and then you would get a higher monthly salary.

B:How about other benefits?

A:All employees must join the health insurance program, and there are many other benefits.I think that most of them are explained in our brochure.Did you get a copy?

A:我明白。

A:噢,真棒。

A:很好。

A:谢谢你。

A:Please sit down, Miss Sylvia.

B:Thank you.

A:Well, I think you probably have a fair idea what sort of job you've applied for.

B:Yes, it was very clearly explained in the advertisement for applications.

A:I see from your application you've had quite a lot of experience as a secretary already.

B:Yes, I've been a secretary for five years, in three different firms.

A:You've changed firms quite often.

B:Yes, I wanted to get more interesting work-that's why I'm applying for this post.

A:Good. Now, perhaps you would tell me what sort of qualities you'd look for in your secretary if you were in my shoes?

B:Well, to start off with, I'd say she needs to be pretty hard working.

A:Yes, as a matter of fact, I'm new to this job myself, but so far I certainly haven't had too much time on my hands. Anything else?

B:I've learnt that the secretary of an export manager has to be able to do a lot of things on her own initiative.

A:Quite right. By the way, do you like traveling?

B:Oh, yes, especially abroad, and I speak French and German fairly fluently.

A:Excellent. You'd probably have to come along with me to conferences and things on the Continent from time to time.

B:I'd like that very much.

A:Now I see from the report the Personnel Department sent me that you did reasonably well in the shorthand and typing test, and very well indeed in the intelligence test. I suppose you'd be able to handle report writing, summaries, keeping minutes at meetings and so on?

B:Yes, I've had to do quite a lot of that kind of work, and I seem to have a better memory than average.

A:Yes, I can see that from your test results, and you'd certainly need it as my secretary because my memory's like a sieve. And what about planning the manager's day?

B:I'm used to doing that, and to seeing that he doesn't forget his appointments.

A:That sounds fine. By the way, how do you feel about sharing an office room with your boss? We're a bit short of space here as you can see.

B:From the secretary's point of view I think it's much better... there's not much chance of her superior forgetting to let her know about important matters.

A:Yes, I rather agree. Well, thank you very much Miss Sylvia, and you'll be hearing from us in the next few days.

B:Thank you, and I certainly hope the answer will be favorable.

A:很正确。

A:不错。

A Useful LessonIn England nobody under the age of eighteen is allowed to drink in a public bar.Mr. Thompson used to go to a bar near his house quite often, but he never took his son,Tom,because he was too young. Then when Tom had his eighteenth birthday, Mr.Thompson took him to his usual bar for the first time. They drank for half an hour, and then Mr.Thompson said to his son,“Now, Tom,I want to teach you a useful lesson. You must always be careful not to drink too much. And how do you know when you've had enough? Well, I'll tell you.Do you see those two lights at the end of the bar? When they seem to have become four, you've had enough and should go home.”“But, Dad,” said Tom,“I can only see one light at the end of the bar.”
